Update Your Gender Marker

Any trans person who has legally changed their name and gender marker with the Department of Home Affairs can apply to the relevant UP system to update their records.

UP students and staff members – whether trans, intersex, gender diverse or simply rejecting conventions around gender – are entitled to register on any online platform, such as the Student Self-Service, with their chosen name and gender title (Mr, Ms or Mx). This should inform any other list where names are recorded.

The chosen name and gender title should guide all interactions among students and staff. In the case of a student who has chosen to use Mx (pronounced “mex”), they should be referred to with the pronouns “they, them and theirs”.

If a student has not legally changed their name and gender marker, UP will keep their official records in their birth name, identity number and assigned gender, but every student and staff member is entitled to use their chosen name, pronoun and gender title on all other platforms.

Follow these step-by-step guides

Please note, the appropriate legal documentation will be required before your name and gender marker can be changed on the system.
