Funding and Student Accommodation 2020
Students who are expecting to make use of funding (NSFAS, bursaries or other sponsorships) to finance their student accommodation, are urged to make use of University accredited accommodation or University residences.
Residence places are limited as the demand exceeds the availability. In the case where we cannot accommodate you at a University residence we advise you to seek accommodation, within your budget, from the list of university accredited accommodation. This list can be found online at:

NSFAS students must please take note of the following:
This year, NSFAS allowances will be paid out to the qualifying students in the form of cash directly into the student’s bank account where applicable. The NSFAS beneficiaries are urged to open accounts with the bank of their choice as soon as possible.
- Definition
- “Cap-funded NSFAS students” are the students who were enrolled at a higher education institution before 2018. Cap-funded students do not qualify for the full study cost bursary as introduced in 2018.
- “Uncapped funded students (FTEN = First Time Entering New students)” are students who entered/are entering a public university for the first time after 2017 and who have not previously studied at any public university. The bursary value is uncapped to a full cost of studies, however certain limitations still apply to books, transport, accommodation and meals, etc.
- Private accommodation (not accredited or part of the accredited list provide in the link above)
NSFAS students who choose to stay in private accommodation that is NOT ACCREDITED by the University of Pretoria must please take note of the following:
- 1 Pay-outs cannot be guaranteed
- 2 Approved NSFAS students are capped in 2019 to the total amount of R49 400.00 (NSFAS reserves the right to adjust this amount at any stage)
- 3 Payments for private accommodation for FTEN students will only be considered if they were unsuccessful to obtain placement in UP accommodation
- 4 A private accommodation lease agreement can only be considered for pay-out by the University of Pretoria Finance Division if the following documents are provided:
- A valid lease agreement
- All applicable agreements for sub-leases
- Proof of ownership of the property in the name of the owner - Only required if you are leasing from an individual and not a registered letting company
