The smallest floral kingdom in the world is a rather big deal – and it is only found in South Africa. Fynbos, the natural hard-leafed shrubland vegetation located in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape provinces, makes up 80% of plant species in this kingdom, and the area has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Cape Citizen Science, a project that enlists the help of the public to identify organisms that are killing some of the fynbos species in the Western Cape, has launched a crowd funding campaign to provide youth from a local township with an opportunity to spend a day learning and taking part in sampling activities at a nearby nature reserve.
South African fynbos largely makes up the smallest floral kingdom in the world and is the only one that occurs entirely in one country – ours.
