Undergraduate

The Bachelor degree in Radiography is now a four year degree, with the final year of study incorporating an honours.

The academic program covers theory and practice. The academic programme comprises 28 weeks a year, during which students attend lectures and gain practical experience in the accredited clinical training facilities. Clinical tuition takes place in accordance with academic progress to enable students to assume responsibility for examinations.

The clinical tuition takes place in a variety of clinical training facilities which range from primary, regional and tertiary healthcare institutions. The Department of Radiology at Steve Biko Academic Hospital is the main training site. Students are further allocated to other sites like; Kalafong Provincial Tertiary Hospital, Mamelodi Regional Hospital, Pretoria West District Hospital, Tshwane District Hospital and Drs Mkhabele and Induna, Radiologist in Louis Pasture Hospital. A roster is drawn up for students to ensure that the compulsory clinical experience with wide exposure (as stipulated by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)) is completed within the three years of study. Students also gain emergency clinical experience after hours. This implies that they have to engage in clinical tuition during weekends and on public holidays.  It is important that this aspect of clinical training be approached with a positive attitude from the start.
