Certificate course in Mammography

Description of the course

The ever expanding field of Mammography has led to a need for trained professionals. Quality training and competency is critical for any radiographer who plans to pursue the specialty of mammography, as well as for those who are required to maintain a current standard of practice. Imaging modalities have seen growth and change that has revolutionized mammography over the past few years – digital technology and its complementary modalities will continue this trend.

 

The intention of this course is to provide you the student with sufficient information to be able to perform mammography examinations of a high quality and being an effective member of the Breast Care Team, therefore providing an optimal service to patients. The content of this course, together with practical experience and conscientious studies will guarantee success.

 

Objectives for the course

Students must:

  • Understand and know the anatomy physiology and pathology of the breast
  • Understand the principles of Mammography
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the importance of breast self examination
  • Demonstrate communication skills when dealing with the patient
  • Perform examinations with the necessary patient care to maintain client satisfaction
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the different forms and management of breast disease
  • Outline different procedures and modalities for demonstrating the breast
  • Demonstrate the ability to plan and commission new imaging facilities
  • Maintain the ALARA principle and discuss how modern equipment trends affect the quality of the image and doses received
  • Assist with invasive procedures
  • Demonstrate that he/she is aware of all the current legal requirements 
  • Demonstrate pattern recognition skills to produce mammograms which will meet the criteria of minimizing false negative and false positive findings
  • Manage quality assurance in a mammography department
  • Incorporate problem-solving skills in decision-making

 

Who should attend?

All qualified diagnostic radiographers actively registered with HPCSA who would like to perform Mammography.

All delegates have to confirm their own clinical site/hospital during the Mammography course. The site indicated should be facilitated by a qualified mammographer with appropriate equipment during the year of study.

Delegates during their year of community service may not attend, a letter of proof related to the completion of community service should be included with registration documents.

 

What are the entry requirements?

  • Qualification in Diagnostic Radiography
  • Registration with HPCSA
  • Proof that the student can perform the mammography examinations in her department and will be permitted to visit other hospitals or practices where a specific modality is available.

 

How is the course presented?

The classes, discussions, assignments, tests, exams and practicals are presented in English.

Assignments that must be completed throughout the year that is applicable to a specific topic, these marks will contribute to the year mark. 

 

What is the contact time and learning hours?

This is a certificate course that extents over one (1) year from February to November and the course commence on the first Saturday of February.

Students can spread the clinical time over two (2) years (Please note the theoretical component must be completed in the first year of enrollment) 

The classes is once a month on a Saturday from 9:00 – 16:00, with the examinations (written, practical and oral) in November

Fees are payable before the day of registration, that is on the first day of class.
