In the southern hemisphere the month of September is a month of renewal, a month of new beginnings, the beginning of a new season also known as Spring; the October heavy rains this year in South Africa have been heavy, a clear symbol of heavenly generosity, a promise of plenty! Our colleague Prof Roumen Anguelov, a.k.a.Roumen, retired as a Professor in our Department after an impressive and colourful career in the Department, 20 years of selfless service but, thanks to his generosity, decided to embark on a new journey in the Department as an Emeritus Professor. Roumen was a Professor until 30th September, 2021 and also the Head of Department for over eight years leading to 31st August, 2021. The impressive breadth and depth of Roumen’s contributions to Mathematics, the Department, the University and beyond are evident. His impact on the University of Pretoria and in particular on the Department goes far beyond what can be written on paper. As a mathematician, what distinguishes Roumen’s career is his singular talent both as a theoretician and experimentalist. As a leader, his amicable and approachable manner has made him not only a helpful resource for colleagues, but also a valuable and generous mentor in the Department, a kind adviser from whose wisdom and deep knowledge colleagues have benefitted. He has also been unfailingly supportive and humane with students but never relaxed his high intellectual standards. These are rare virtues to find in one person, but it is especially rare to find them combined with compassion and kindness. During his terms as Head, the Department made crucial strides and on many an occasion it has been acknowledged as the top Mathematics Department in South Africa and number two in Africa. That has made us stand tall in the Mathematics community, thank you, Roumen!

Indeed, the time is right for you, Roumen. As you assume the tenure of Emeritus Professor, the Department feels lucky and grateful that you will continue to be a needed resource but wishes you many more years of happiness, family time and success. We return your generosity by simply wishing you plenty from life ahead!
