International Mathematics Competition for University Students - UP excels

Posted on July 31, 2020

The 27th International Mathematics Competition for University Students was scheduled to be held in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria, 24-30 July 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the competition took place online from 25 to 30 July 2020. For more information on the IMC, visit their webpage: www.imc-math.org.uk.

Our team from the University of Pretoria are:

Team Leader: Eder Kikianty

Deputy Team Leader: Harry Wiggins

Students/Participants: Adriaan de Clercq (BSc Honours Mathematics); Kefentse Freddy Dipudi (BSc Mathematics, 3rd year); Michelle Jacobs (BSc Mathematics, 3rd year); James Murray Louw (BSc Mathematics, 3rd year);  Berne Nortier (BSc Applied Mathematics, 3rd year); Jason Pillay (BSc Applied Mathematics, 3rd year); Nian Vorster (BSc Mathematics, 3rd year)

Myself and Harry would like to congratulate all seven students that participated. They diligently attended all training sessions, even during lockdown where we had to do it all online. We are extremely proud of them. They did extremely challenging problems for 4 hours each day, on 26 and 27 July.

There were 546 participants, the biggest IMC yet, 10 participants were awarded Grand First Prize, 107 First Prize, 91 Second Prize, 84 Third Prize, 128 Honourable Mentions.

We would like to especially congratulate Adriaan de Clercq and James Murray Louw who received Second Prize (Adriaan narrowly missed the First Prize Category!), and Nian Vorster who received Honourable Mention.

In addition to the individual results, the IMC organisers also considered results by team. The UP team was ranked 49th out of 96 teams. There is also a "bonus" award (for the most effective team leaders), a prize for team leaders who managed to appeal and increase their team's results. I was ranked in the bracket of 33rd-36th out of 42 team leaders that received points.
