Around 190 mathematically gifted learners from schools around Pretoria were invited to attend the event. After some practice questions given to them by Ruaan Kellerman, the learners wrote a short olympiad, which will be used as a selection test for participation in the Siyanqoba programme. While the learners had refreshments after the olympiad and attended a talk about fractals given by Ansie Harding, our postgraduate students and assistants Aderogba Adebayo, Shitu Hassan, Adera Kachienga and Collen Motsepa, marked the olympiad answer sheets.
The three highest scoring learners from each grade won one of the following prizes: (i) a University of Pretoria executive folder, (ii) a combination pen / laser pointer / memory stick, and (iii) an electronic desk clock / calendar / thermometer. A number of Mathematics books were also handed to the Phateng Secondary School. The event was well received by the learners, their parents, and teachers.
