The Department of Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology (GGM) recently demonstrated its capability in geospatial science on the global stage, with a strong delegation attending and contributing to the International Cartographic Conference (ICC) 2025. The conference, held from 18 to 22 August in Vancouver, Canada, gathered international experts under the forward-looking theme Mapping the Future: Innovation, Inclusion, and Sustainability.
The department’s international standing was highlighted by the involvement of its staff and associates in the conference’s proceedings. Dr. Snyman, Senior Cartographer from the Department, together with Ms. Kathryn Arnold from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), represented South Africa at the General Assembly. The South African contingent also included Professor Serena Coetzee, a Research Associate to the Department. GGM's commitment to cutting-edge research was showcased through several presentations:
Dr. Samy Katumba and his MSc Geoinformatics student Portia Mnikathi presented their collaborative research findings.
Dr. Hansen, Senior Lecturer in the Department, shared insights from her ongoing work.
Dr. Antony Cooper, a Research Associate, also contributed to the technical sessions with a presentation on his latest research.
Dr. Hansen, an active member of the Working Group Inclusive Cartography, helped organise the pre-conference workshop held on 17 August, titled Towards maps for everyone, and participated in the Working Group’s business meeting held on Wednesday. This involvement underscores the department’s dedication to ensuring cartography serves all populations, aligning with the conference's theme of Inclusion.
The Department of Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology is proud of its staff and associates for their valuable contributions and participation in this international event, reinforcing UP's role in advancing the geospatial science.
