On 30 October, several students from Environmental Geomorphology (GGY 361) undertook a field trip to Hydromulch, a soil rehabilitation company in Kempton Park. The group first learned about cutting-edge "soil-generating" techniques that can be used in the mine rehabilitation industry, as well as the various erosion control measures produced at Hydromulch. Thereafter, we were taken on a tour of the facilities, including the biomat factory and experimental plots, to compare the efficacy of erosion control. This was followed by a demonstration of hydroseeding, a technique used to facilitate the re-establishment of vegetation on slopes. The afternoon was concluded with boerewors rolls and a networking session. The trip introduced the students to industry applications of the theoretical work that they have learned about, and gave them a glimpse into their potential future working lives.
