University of Pretoria hosts Tletlanyo Secondary School learners

Posted on September 01, 2025

The University of Pretoria’s Department of Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology (GGM) received the privilege of hosting thirty-six Grade 11 students and their educators from Tletlanyo Secondary School in Kimberley on Saturday, 23 August 2025. The aim of the visit was to provide the learners a practical introduction to Geographical Information Systems (GIS), familiarise them with university life and inspire them to pursue further studies in the geospatial sciences.

The program began in Geography 1-2, the main lecture hall of the Department of Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology (GGM), where Dr Philemon Tsele gave learners a warm welcome and encouraging words. The department’s academic programs, admissions requirements, career options and bursary opportunities were laid out by Dr Tsele as well. Four postgraduate students, Simone Kriel, Natasha Tshuma, Lunamandla Mpahleni and Aser Moifo shared their individual journeys from high school to university, highlighting their academic experiences, campus and recommendations for excelling in university.

Following a short break, Dr Mcebisi Qabaqaba, with the assistance of Natasha, Simone, Lunamandla and Aser, guided the learners in a two-hour GIS mapping activity in the Geo 2-3 computer lab. The learners had the opportunity to work with real geographical data utilising Google Earth Engine, acquiring hands-on experience of cloud-based mapping and environmental evaluation. Throughout the real-world activity, they were able to learn how Geoinformatics can be applied to solve practical challenges.

After a few group photos at 12:30, the program came to an end, leaving learners enthused and more educated about career options in the geospatial sciences. Their questions and curiosity demonstrated a great desire to continue their studies in GGM in the future.

The department’s commitment to mentoring, community involvement and motivating the next generation of geographers and geoinformatics was demonstrated by this outreach program.
