On 18–19 November 2024, three BSocSci Honours students in Geography and Environmental Sciences attended and presented their final research at the International Student Symposium on the Sustainable Development Goals: Implications for People and Planet, hosted at Unisa, Pretoria. This interdisciplinary symposium provided a platform for students to showcase their research and reflect on its connections to the SDGs. The event is part of a larger project and a South-South partnership between South Africa and Brazil, offering students the opportunity to network and engage with peers and academics from diverse backgrounds.
Mr Kamvalethu Nyawo presented his findings on the challenges of accessing safe drinking water in Redoubt Village in the Eastern Cape. His research aligns strongly with SDG 6, which focuses on "Clean Water and Sanitation". Ms Chanel Scrooby presented her research on the impact of events at the National Botanical Garden in Pretoria, linking it to SDG 11, which focuses on "Sustainable Cities and Communities". Lastly, Ms Caitlin Daniels presented on the role of space and its influence on Coloured identity in Cape Town, connecting her work to both SDG 10, which focuses on "Reduced Inequalities", and SDG 11. Caitlin was awarded the prize for best paper presenter in her session, receiving a book as part of the accolade.
Reflecting on her experience, Chanel said: “It was a wonderful opportunity to present my research and align it with the SDGs, while also meeting students from other institutions. The symposium deepened my understanding of the critical role sustainable development plays in shaping our future. Its interdisciplinary nature highlighted its relevance and importance across various fields, making it an essential area of focus.”

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to broaden my understanding across diverse fields and engage with passionate scholars from both across the country and around the globe. It was a privilege to attend this event, and I am truly grateful for the friendships and knowledge that I gained along the way.”
The Department of Geography, Geoinformatics, and Meteorology is proud of these students' achievements and their contributions to critical discussions on sustainable development. Their success highlights the importance of research in addressing pressing global challenges and the value of engaging in interdisciplinary platforms like this symposium.
