Emily Barnes, a Master's student in the Department of Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology, has been awarded the Society of South African Geographers (SSAG) Outstanding Honours Research Award for 2024. Her 2023 Honours research report, titled Production and Consumption in Urban Social Spaces: Exploring the Foodscapes of Hazelwood, has garnered significant recognition for its exceptional quality and insightful analysis. The award comes with a prize of R10 000, which will support her ongoing postgraduate studies.
Emily states, “Honours is a personal and professional milestone, so receiving the SSAG award has affirmed my commitment to conducting research with equal parts passion and academic rigour. It's also heartening to have received this acknowledgement for more interdisciplinary geographical research. I'm encouraged by the community of geographers in South Africa and look forward to contributing to it further”.
