On Friday, 31 May, Janique Savy and Verosha Naidoo from Esri South Africa spoke with the 3rd year students of GIS 310 about real-world applications of geospatial data science.

Students were exposed to the opportunities at Esri South Africa (see 3rd photo of the top row of photos) , or the video below.

In addition, students were given a detailed look at GIS in action using the example of McDonalds South Africa and how to place a new franchise using suitability analyses. The presentation touched on various aspects the students have been taught this semester, including the importance of data sources, quality and standards, modelling and optimisation studies, and data visualisation. The Department wishes to thank Esri South Africa for taking the time to visit the students and speak about the work they are doing in the industry and the opportunities that exist.
