3rd year student field trip to the Mogale Tailings Retreatment Project

Posted on November 12, 2023

On Saturday, 11 November, a group of 11 GGY 361 students, accompanied by the module presenter, Prof. Natalie Haussmann, visited the Mogale Tailings Retreatment Project in Randfontein, where they were hosted by Mr. Roley Noffke and his sons, Carl and Rolo, from Hydromulch, a soil rehabilitation company based in Bapsfontein. At the site, the students were shown the soil rehabilitation techniques that have been put in place to rehabilitate the wetland and surrounding pan, after extensive gold mining and toxic tailings had polluted the site. They then visited the Hydromulch offices, where they were shown how various soil erosion control systems, such as erosion control blankets and eco logs, were manufactured. They also saw a hydroseeder in action, as well as how vetiver grass, an excellent phytocontrol system, is grown. The day ended with a braai at the Hydromulch offices. All in all, a very successful and informative Saturday morning was had by all!
