The Javett Art Centre Hosts Interactive Urban Geography Honours Module

Posted on July 25, 2023

The Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria, known for its vibrant exhibitions and immersive experiences, recently played host to an engaging urban geography honours module. As part of the art centre's interactive classroom exhibition, all the classes for this module were facilitated on-site, providing students with a unique and inspiring learning environment.

The module delved into the profound theme of urban life in South Africa during apartheid, using artwork as a lens to critically examine the historical context. Students had the opportunity to explore a captivating collection of artworks, titled Glimpses of the 50s and 60s by Sam Nhlengethwa which vividly depicted the challenges, struggles, and resilience of individuals living in cities during that era.

Under the guidance of Dr. J.J. Gregory and expert facilitators from the Javett Art Centre, students actively engaged with the artwork, analyzing the socio-political implications and reflecting on the impact of apartheid on urban spaces. This multidisciplinary approach encouraged students to develop a deeper understanding of urban geography, history, and social dynamics within a South African context.

However, the learning experience went beyond theoretical exploration. As an integral part of the module curriculum, students were also tasked with producing and presenting their own creative pieces that reflected their sense of place in the contemporary South African city. This hands-on approach allowed students to express their individual perspectives and contribute to the ongoing narrative of urban development in the country.

The Javett Art Centre's interactive classroom exhibition not only provided a stimulating learning environment but also fostered a strong sense of community among the students. Collaborative discussions, debates, and presentations enriched the educational experience, encouraging students to engage critically and think creatively.

The success of the urban geography honours module facilitated at the Javett Art Centre is a testament to the institution's commitment to innovative and immersive learning. By bridging the gap between art, history, and geography, this unique initiative provided students with a comprehensive understanding of urban landscapes and their significance in shaping societies.

As the Javett Art Centre continues to explore the intersection of art and education, it remains a beacon of inspiration, offering students and visitors alike the opportunity to engage with South Africa's rich cultural heritage while fostering critical thinking and creativity.
