Posted on February 06, 2024

Customarily universities interested in hosting the Law Teachers Conference, announce their intention and candidacy 18 months in advance. They are then given an opportunity to present their proposal for hosting at the general society meeting. This year Prof Charles Maimela –Deputy Dean - of the Faculty of Law, delivered a compelling bid that received an astounding success to host the 2025 SALTC conference which will be held in July next year.

We also applaud Dr Ashley Nyaude, a lecturer at the Department of Mercantile Law for being nominated to the executive committee of the Society for Law Teachers of Southern Africa (SLTSA) as a treasurer for a three-year term.

Every 18 months Southern African University that are members of the Society for Law Teachers of Southern Africa converge to share topical research by presenting their respective individual or joint papers under the banner of the SA Law Teachers conference. The papers presented at the conference, are accepted through a stringent review process led by seasoned legal academics. For ages, the society has been a trusted voice for law teachers boasting a membership of 21 public and private universities.

At each conference meeting, first-time presenters are ranked. The Faculty of Law was well represented with Mrs. Kgopotso Maunatla a lecturer at the Department of Private Law attaining the best overall presenter, Dr Tshepiso Ngoepe a lecturer at Mercantile Law Department scooping fifth position, and Dr Keneilwe Radebe a lecturer at Public Law Department winning the special JUTA prize. The faculty is immensely proud of all faculty members who presented papers, led sessions as chairs, and participated in panel discussions.

The conference provides an opportunity for accomplished and emerging scholars to share best practices in teaching. As well as creates an environment that promotes exploring and prospecting opportunities to work together for the advancement of legal teaching & training.

The Faculty of Law has hit the ground running with preparations for the Southern African Law Teachers Conference 2025 and is looking forward to hosting a memorable and invigorating meeting.
