Commencement of MPhil in Medical Law and Ethics

Professor Pieter Carstens of the Department of Public Law in conjunction with the Centre for Law and Medicine today welcomed back the first class of multidisciplinary students to enrol in the MPhil degree in Medical Law and Ethics in 2015.

The vision of the Centre for Law and Medicine is to promote the unique transcendental nature of medical law and its relationship and impact on all other related disciplines. In so doing the Centre aims to conduct research into the fields of medical law, medical ethics, jurisprudence, forensic medicine, forensic psychiatry and psychology, telemedicine and psychopharmacology bioethics. Furthermore, the Centre hopes to promote and generate expertise in the mentioned fields of study in order to contribute to the development of law and medicine in South Africa and Africa.

Various expert guest lecturers will be involved in the presenting of the coursework component of this degree and students will be expected to author a dissertation in order to fulfil the requirements of the MPhil. The Centre also offers short courses / certificate courses on medico-legal issues aimed at legal and health care practitioners available through Enterprises University of Pretoria (Pty) Ltd.
