A PhD in Mathematical Sciences consists of a thesis (360 credits) in one of several fields in which research is actively being done in the Department. (Research Focus Areas).
An appropriate master’s degree is required for admission to doctoral study in mathematics or in applied mathematics. The programme composition of the master’s degree must have included a heavy research component that led to a dissertation reflecting originality either in the content or in the presentation. In the selection procedure the candidate’s complete honours and master’s academic records will be considered.
Admission is subject to the availability of a suitable supervisor.
The final approval is granted by the Faculty Postgraduate Committee.
Subject to faculty regulations, a student must complete his or her doctoral studies within three (maximum four) years after first registering for the degree.
A PhD: Mathematical Sciences student should enrol for one of the following thesis codes as is applicable to his/her field of study:
WIS 990 Thesis: Mathematics 990 (360 credits)
or
TWS 990 Thesis: Applied Mathematics 990 (360 credits)
Total credits required: 360
At least one refereed article should have been published or accepted for publication in an accredited journal before the end of the research period.
