About us

The Department of Companion Animal Clinical Studies is housed in the Onderstepoort Veterinary Animal Hospital on the Onderstepoort campus of the University of Pretoria. The Department is responsible for teaching, research and service rendering in the disciplines of equine medicine and surgery; small animal medicine and surgery; animal behaviour and welfare; veterinary anaesthesiology; veterinary clinical pathology; veterinary diagnostic imaging; veterinary dentistry and veterinary ophthalmology.
 
The Department presents a number of modules for veterinary and paraveterinary students. There is an emphasis on experiential training for both under- and postgraduate students.  In addition, continuing professional development short courses are presented to practicing veterinarians.
 
Several research focus areas have been identified and postgraduate research projects are aligned with these. The research conducted within the Department is increasingly interdisciplinary and international collaboration is encouraged and supported.
 
The Department provides an outpatient clinic service for the immediate community and a comprehensive national referral service for practicing veterinarians. In addition, the Department undertakes several outreach projects as part of its community engagement.
