Moving Forward: Mobility Scooters Making Campus Accessible

Posted on August 21, 2025

The Access, Disability and Inclusion Services (ADIS) continues to ensure that no student is left behind. One of the practical ways in which we support students is through the provision of mobility scooters, available to students with permanent mobility impairment, temporary impairment due to injury, or any other mobility-related need.

A mobility scooter is a motorised vehicle designed to assist individuals with mobility impairments. Much like a powered tricycle or quadricycle, it serves as a reliable mobility aid which enhances independence. For UP students, these scooters make navigating the campus from lecture halls to dining areas easier, safer, and more convenient.

For Kea, the scooter has been “truly wonderful” and has made daily life on campus much easier.

“My experience with the mobility scooter has been truly wonderful. It has made my life much easier, especially since I am unable to walk long distances due to limitations in my feet. Thanks to the scooter, I can move all around campus comfortably,” she explains.

Kea encourages other students to embrace the services provided by ADIS.

“Whether you are living with a permanent or temporary disability, I encourage everyone to take advantage of the facilities at UP. Since 2023, my interactions with ADIS have shown me that the university genuinely strives to include everyone. I am forever grateful to the ADIS team for lending me the scooter during lecture hours.”

For Matthew, the scooter has also been a source of support during recovery from injury.

“The mobility cart has been a great help to me to get around Tuks. I’ve been on crutches for 15 weeks, with three more weeks to go, and the scooter has helped me enjoy my classes without the constant struggle of moving between buildings,” he shares.

Matthew adds that the service reflects the caring spirit of the Disability Unit.

“The team at ADIS sets a real example of how to serve and support others. Their help made my university experience far more manageable, and I’m truly grateful for everything they’ve done. I know many other students will also benefit from their kindness and dedication.”

The mobility scooter service is just one of the ways ADIS is building a more inclusive campus at UP, providing practical solutions which empower students to participate fully in academic and campus life.

By breaking down physical barriers, these scooters are doing more than helping students get to class they are helping them move forward with confidence and independence.
