Diabetes has emerged as a global challenge following the rapid increase in urbanization and obesity. The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has further highlighted the vulnerability of people living with diabetes which is exacerbated by suboptimal management and care. The University of Pretoria Diabetes Research Centre was established as an entity following the collaborative work existing between various Schools and Departments within the Faculty of Health Sciences including Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Nutrition, Sport Sciences, Nursing, and the School of Health Systems and Public Health.
The Diabetes Research Centre is a multidisciplinary and interfaculty initiative which main focus is to promote optimal diabetes prevention and care through innovative world-class research. The Diabetes Research Centre consists of several research clusters driven by renowned academics who are experts in their respective fields. The research clusters are focused on Diabetes Management in Primary Healthcare, Diabetes in Pregnancy, Diabetes Management in Hospitals, Diabetes in Children and Adolescents, Diabetes Technologies and Diabetes Prevention and Health Promotion (Nutrition and Sport Science).
Twenty members from the Faculty of Health Sciences and other faculties are contributing to the work of the Centre. They bring together their expertise and skills to conduct ground-breaking diabetes research and develop tailor-made practical solutions to major local and regional challenges around diabetes. We have a strong focus on translational research and a person-centred approach to improve patient care and outcomes not only in hospital but particularly in primary care and in the community.
We are excited about using transdisciplinary innovative research to expand our knowledge base, increase postgraduate research output and collaborate with partners and stakeholders to improve the lives of people living with diabetes in South Africa and beyond.
