Dr. Simao has worked in small animal private practice for eight years, as a Locum veterinarian in and around Pretoria, with an interest in behavioural medicine. She spent three years working both in private practice and the pharmaceutical industry at Elanco Animal health as a Technical consultant before taking the Ethology lecturer position in the Department of Companion Animal Clinical Studies at the Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Pretoria in March 2020.

Her interest in both behavior and teaching were peaked since qualifying as a veterinarian in 2012 when she was working both in private practice and the pharmaceutical industry. During her time in private practice she has worked with animal behavior experts on several cases who have inspired her and further peaked her interest and passion in this specific field.

Prior to obtaining a Veterinary science degree in 2012 Dr. Simao completed an Honours degree in Zoology at The University of Pretoria in 2008. Her undergraduate degree was obtained at The University of Witwatersrand in 2005. After obtaining her undergraduate degree in in 2005 she travelled and worked as a volunteer for Freeme.

Research Expertise/Interest


Dr. Simao is currently doing an MSc project monitoring the effect of equine maternal / appeasing pheromones on stress indicators horses used for practical training of veterinary students. Other research interests include assessment of stress in animals, and working animals.
