Clinical Pathology

General Information

The Section of Veterinary Clinical Pathology is situated in the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital. Our laboratory offers high-quality, state-of-the-art diagnostic testing and consultation services to clinicians in the OVAH, internal and external researchers and private practitioners. The laboratory is currently staffed by three specialist clinical pathologists, one clinical pathology resident, four veterinary laboratory technologists and three administrative/support staff.

The three focus areas of the section are:

Diagnostic service:

We provide a comprehensive, timely and accurate veterinary laboratory testing service covering the areas of haematology, clinical chemistry, haemostasis, cytology and urinalysis.

Education:

The academic personnel in the section are involved in undergraduate and postgraduate training and continuing education for practitioners. Our teaching model includes hybrid and case-based learning, practicals and small-group teaching. We offer a residency training programme (MMedVet) approved by the European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology.

Research:

We are actively involved in several research projects and supervise a number of post-graduate students. Our research is aligned with the faculty research themes of Pathobiology of Disease and African Wildlife Health and Management.

Current research areas are:

  • Haemostatic and immunological changes in canine babesiosis and canine parvovirus
  • Clinical pathology and laboratory diagnostic testing in wildlife species.
