Ethology Research

Our current research areas are:

  • Human-animal interaction
  • Behaviour and heart rate variability as stress indicators in especially working animals
  • Mitigation of stress experienced by working animals using behavioural modification and pheromones
Meet the researchers

Dr Elize van Vollenhoven

BVSc, LLB, PhD
Section Head
Senior Lecturer: Animal Welfare, Ethics, Law and Behavioural Medicine

Tel: +27(0) 12 529 8263
Email: [email protected]
ORCID ID: 0000-0003-1855-9155

Dr Elize van Vollenhoven’s primary area of research focuses on stress in companion animals. The main aim of the research is to use non-invasive methods, such as behavioural indicators and heart rate variability, to quantify the stress. She is also investigating stress mitigating strategies such as pheromones, acupuncture and behavioural modification.

Chiraag Simao

Dr Chiraag Simao

BVSc, BSc(Hons)
Lecturer: Animal Welfare, Nutrition and Behaviour

Tel: +27(0) 12 529 8271
Email: [email protected]
ORCID ID: 0000-0002-9952-1193

Dr Chiraag Simao’s research focus is the study of heart rate variability (HRV) in horses to uncover its relationship to emotional states. The main objective of her research is to expand on current HRV knowledge, stress responses and overall well-being of animals.

Dr Ashleigh Knowles

BSc, BVSc
Lecturer: Animal Welfare, Nutrition and Behaviour

Tel: +27(0) 12 529 8260
Email: [email protected]
ORCID ID: 0000-0002-9336-1811

Dr Ashleigh Knowles’s research focuses primarily on the physiological assessment of specific behaviours and stress in companion animals. The main aim of the research is to investigate the use of non-invasive, objective methods, such as the measurement of heart rate variability, to detect important behavioural traits in working animals.
