In 2005, the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology implemented the compulsory JCP module for all its undergraduate students (http://www.up.ac.za/jcp or http://www.facebook.com/jcp203).
For their JCP project, Nicolaas de Beer, Rynhardt Bezuidenhout, Impi Visser, Mardi Brink and Casper Kotzé renovated Zangathi Primary School, a rural primary school located 12km West of Pongola, Kwa-Zulu Natal.
The students reflected afterwards:
”Spending three days in a rural community with people that live with only with the basic needs has taught me not to take anything in life for granted. We have so much to be thankful for. To see people go to a school with the minimum books, classrooms, stationary and other needs made me realize how privileged I have been to be in a school with everything in abundance. The few days working on the JCP project also taught me that you can do and accomplish so much more in life with teamwork”
