Embarking on the Path of Community-Engaged Transdisciplinary Research

Posted on October 12, 2023

The University of Pretoria (UP) is firmly dedicated to utilising its expertise, knowledge, and research capabilities to effect positive change and elevate the communities in South Africa while actively contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To manifest this commitment, UP has adopted a holistic transdisciplinary approach to community development education, which equips students with invaluable real-world experiences through community-engaged learning initiatives.

On the 10th of October 2023, the Unit for Community Engagement, in a collaborative effort with the Mamelodi Campus, hosted the inaugural Transdisciplinary Community Engagement Seminar at UP's Hatfield UP Campus. The primary objective of this seminar was to unite the various disciplines present across UP's faculties and schools, students at various academic stages, and community organisations that serve as both research sites and educational partners. This gathering provided a platform for lecturers, students, and community partners actively engaged in academic community outreach to present and discuss their projects, foster professional connections, and explore potential opportunities for collaboration.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Mamelodi Campus Team, specifically Dr. Martina Jordaan, Ms. Lorraine Makena, and Mr. Clement Mathebula. We would also like to acknowledge the exceptional contributions of UP's Unit for Community Engagement, including Dr Eugene Machimana, Mr Albert Matlheketlha, and Ms Londiwe Mahlangu, for orchestrating this exceptional event.
