JCP students assist at Jan Smuts House Museum

Posted on April 16, 2016

A number of groups are assisting at the Smuts House Museum for their project. Natasha Hall, Christo McLacren, Wynand Ras and Thinus van Rhijn (engineering students) constructed a roof over the Marmon Herrington MK.IVJM Durie, Louis Esselen, Roelof Euvard, Giles Harmse and Louis Lombaard revamp the veranda of the Smuts House and Marno Hermann, Stephan Nell, Amanda Pierce, Linda Potgieter and Johanni van der Merwe created an inventory list of the library.

One student reflected afterwards:

“I found the experience educational and fascinating, because we got an up close and personal look of the inner workings and interests of Jan Smuts’ mind, by seeing what kind of literature he preferred and what he researched. It also gave us a more personal idea of what his role was in our history and why he did what he did, giving us an opportunity to form our own opinions and not just adopt those of biased historians and scholars. The project also gave us a great feel for team work and how to function the best according to each person’s specific skill set and helped us to give something back to the community and preserve an important part of history for future generations.”
