Novel point-of-care test to identify neonatal sepsis

Posted on March 12, 2024

Our Research Centre is involved in an exciting pilot study which could be ground-breaking for early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis using a point-of-care test which can be administered by health workers in the ward setting.
Sepsis is one of the leading causes of neonatal mortality and rapid early diagnosis can enable healthcare providers to make informed decisions quickly, improving outcomes and reducing the unnecessary use of antibiotics. Current tests used for diagnosis of neonatal sepsis lack sensitivity and results are delayed as specimens require laboratory analysis, which results in delays in appropriate treatment, especially in less resourced settings.
Look out for our results on this exciting journey towards improved neonatal care.
