Mrs Andrea Prinsloo, a PhD student from the Department of Immunology recently presented her study on antiretroviral and HIV-exposed-but-uninfected (HEU) infants in collaboration with the Research Centre at the SA AIDS 2023 Conference in June 2023 Durban. The immunological and metabolic changes in these infants and their effects are unclear.
Her research in the Siyakhula study highlighted that:
- Increased maternal immune activation causes increased immune exhaustion and immune activation in HEU infants at birth and 10 weeks
- Early suboptimal growth in HEU infants may be associated with decreased levels of beta-hydroxybutyric acid
