Dr Akanmu is specialised in ruminant nutrition. His area of research focuses on the use of feed additives from natural sources as growth promoters which can be used as replacement for synthetic chemicals currently used in animal production. Dr Akanmu has contributed towards the development of medicinal plant extracts for use in animal nutrition is currently interested in the metabolomics of medicinal plants, and monitoring of changes in rumen microbes and parasites from animals fed natural feed additives.

He is the author or co-author of 3 peer-reviewed international journal papers and 10 conference presentations.
