Animal Science is an integral part of agricultural production and the work environment of a an animal scientist encompasses the production chain from primary farming level, animal feed formulation, selection and breeding of farm animals and wildlife to the marketing and processing of the final products. In each of these links of this value chain, there are career opportunities for Animal scientists.
Animal scientists may find employment:
- As technical advisors in animal feeds & animal breeding industry, including poultry, pigs /livestock
- As animal nutritionists performing feed formulations for different farm animal species/companion animals
- As animal nutritionists developing new animal feeds and feed additives
- As animal breeders & geneticists developing selection programs and models
- As researchers in any of the three disciplines
- As Department of Agriculture as animal scientists for livestock conservation and strategic planning
- As professional private animal science consultants
- As livestock extension and training in the livestock and boarder agricultural industry
- As meat scientists in retail or product development
This list is not exhaustive! There are many avenues through which one can use their robust UP Animal Science degree. For example, one of our Masters candidates is Animal Breeding and Genetics now works full-time for a pet-food formulation company, one of our undergraduate students has started a rabbit farm and one of our teaching assistants used knowledge from her music degree as the foundation for her Masters in Animal Breeding and Genetics!
