Abraham H de Vries received an honorary doctorate from UP on the recommendation of the Afrikaans Department. He was
interviewed by Wium van Zyl.
In this interview Braam de Vries explains how much the honorary degree from UP means to him. More than only the recognition for his own work, he also sees this as recognition for the short story, a genre that is often neglected in world literature. Asked about the political engagement of his work he explains that he feels an obligation to be human and therefore engaged with the political and social reality, but that this obligation should not lead to preaching. He also has an obligation to his craft, the art of the short story. He explains that we are still recovering from the dehumanizing colour history, as humans, and that he is trying to tell stories of what we experience and hope. We are compelled to continue telling human stories.
