On 18 April Prof Lize Kriel from UP and Ms Margrit Schulze from the University of Limpopo presented a paper at the joint Conference of the Association for German Studies in Southern Africa and the GAS (Germanistik in Afrika Subsahara), hosted by the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein.
The topic of the paper was:
A German repository of African knowledge, and a translator in the waiting room.
In the paper we contemplated the role of the translator in making historical sources accessible - specifically German-language material that may contribute to our understanding of African history. We also argued for a broader consideration of translation as a process of cultural mediation as proposed by Walter Benjamin. Our participation in the Conference was funded by the National Institute for the Humanities and the Social Sciences, as part of a project on the Mission Archive as a repository of African knowledge.
