Fine Arts student takes home first prize in the drawing and painting category

Nazarite Tam, a student of Fine Arts at UP, has won first prize in the drawing and painting category in the Irma Stern Still Life Competition at the Turbine Art Fair.

About the Irma Stern Still Life Competition

In 2017, Strauss & Co mounted an exhibition of magnificent Pierneef paintings, belonging to a single collector, at the Turbine Art Fair in Johannesburg (TAF). Strauss & Co invited Artist Proof Studio students to pull prints inspired by the linocuts of Pierneef. These works were exhibited alongside the Pierneef originals and were available for purchase. Needless to say, they sold out quickly.

The two mission statements of TAF are to:

a) Encourage discerning collecting

b) Promote the work of emerging artists

This year, 2018, the focus for the Strauss & Co TAF collaboration, was the Still Lifes of acclaimed South African artist, Irma Stern. The competition this year was to create an Irma Stern inspired Still Life work in any of the following media categories:

 Painting

 Sculpture

 PrintMaking

 CeramicArt

 NewMedia
