The Department of Visual Art’s associated lecturer in Fine Arts Guy du Toit, is participating in a group exhibition, Making Africa – A continent of contemporary design at the Guggenheim Bilbao in Spain. The exhibition is comprised of 70 artists from where a strong reflection of the continent’s artistic talent is showcased in design, fashion design, fine art and architecture. The exhibition addresses the everyday design aesthetics of Africa, by showing its most innovative artists. Participating artists were selected over a period of two years after interviews were held and research conducted in a few of Africa’s largest cities, such as Cape Town, Cairo and Dakar.
Du Toit’s work Improvised seating (2014) is made out of everyday materials such as bricks and stone, which he cast in bronze to comment on the socio-political condition of South Africa. Du Toit has exhibited in various South African and international exhibitions. The exhibition runs from the 30th October 2015 to the 21st of February 2016.
