Image/text, a seminar and exhibition hosted by the Department of Visual Arts and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation of the University of Pretoria

Posted on September 15, 2015

This colloquium Image/text  took its cue from WJT Mitchell’s concept imagetext which addresses the complex, intermedial, multimodal exchange between image/text and text/image.  These questions transformed into: How are images translated into text?
How is text imaged/imagined?
What is the interface between image and text/text and image?
How do image and text/ text and image relate?
And lastly, how are the boundaries established, structured and maintained between image and text?

Image/text incorporated a seminar and exhibition at the Anton van Wouw House in Pretoria. Prof Lize Kriel, Dr Jenni Lauwrens and Natalie Fossey from the Department of Visual Arts delivered presentations.  Avitha Sooful, Dr Johan Thom and senior Fine Arts students presented artworks in response to the theme.

Professor Raimi Gbadamosi (University of the Witwatersrand), James Sey (University Of Johannesburg), Cynthia Kros (University of the Witwatersrand) and Georges Pfruender (Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz, Switzerland), artist Roger Ballen (artist), Sean O’Toole (University of Cape Town) and Marko Stamenkovic (University of South Africa) presented papers on the theme.

Image/text was convened by Prof Amanda du Preez and Dr Johan Thom.  For more information please contact Dr Johan Thom at 012 420 6414 or [email protected].
