Uplifting Young Women: A Successful Pad Drive at Vukani-Mawethu Secondary

Posted on May 16, 2025

In a powerful collaboration between UP RAG, Respublica Urban Nest, and Health House, a pad drive was successfully carried out to support the menstrual health and dignity of learners at Vukani Mawethu High School. What began as a simple call to action turned into a deeply impactful initiative—reaching 118 Grade 9 female learners. We were able to donate sanitary towels and hygiene essentials such as deodorant.

But this was not just about donation. It was about empowerment.

The drive culminated in an engaging and educational session that created a safe space for learning and dialogue around menstruation. We tackled key topics such as:

  • Menstrual health and hygiene: Providing accurate information and practical advice to manage periods safely and with confidence.

  • Self-care during menstruation: Encouraging young girls to listen to their bodies, practice self-kindness, and normalize rest and care during their cycles.

  • Challenging stigma and bias: Addressing the harmful taboos and societal shame that often surround periods, and equipping learners with language and confidence to advocate for themselves.

This initiative was more than a handout. By openly discussing periods, we helped dismantle the silence and shame too often associated with them. Many learners expressed their gratitude for not only receiving much-needed sanitary products but also for being seen, heard, and educated.

We extend heartfelt thanks to our partners at Respublica Urban Nest and Health House for their generous support, as well as to the educators and learners at Vukani-Mawethu Secondary for welcoming us into their space with warmth and openness.

This is only the beginning. Period dignity is a right, not a privilege—and we remain committed to driving change, one learner at a time.
