In 1918 the Transvaal University College (TUC) Athletic Club was established.  Residences and students in day houses participated annually in a range of athletic competitions since the early 1920s to gain points for their houses. One of the covenant athletics prizes during the inter house athletics events was the Suzman shield for cross country.  The cross country shield was named after Saul (Pete) Suzman, the captain of the T.U.C. and president of the S. A. Universities Athletic Federation. Suzman  organized the first annual Inter-Varsity Sports,  in 1921 between the then Transvaal (Pretoria), Johannesburg and Grey (Bloemfontein) University Colleges.
