On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" a new building was opened for ladies residence, Asterhof. This residence now had place for 152 students in the main building and 186.students in annexes.

The architects Strauss Brink designed it according to a colourful modern style. There would be seven floors, which would be higher than any of the other buildings in Hatfield and offered a lovely view from the higher levels. Special permission had to be obtained from the city council, since it was only allowed to build up to 4 levels. At the time of its completion, it was described as an ‘ultra modern skyscraper’.
