A day in the life at the University of Pretoria. 29 January 2018

Posted on January 29, 2024

On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria", TuksCricket beat Central University of Technology’s (CUT) at the cricket tournament held in Potchefstroom. The student newspaper, Perdeby, reported that the Tukkie team managed 131/6 over CUT’s 129/10.  UP’s Rubin Hermann’s hit 45 (29) and the FNB Best Batsman went to fellow Tukkie Corbin Bosch.

The first cricket club was founded in 1912 at Transvaal University College (TUC), but it shortly disintegrated, forcing cricket enthusiasts to join other clubs in the Pretoria area. In 1919, the TUC Cricket Club was created. This club was supported by UP personnel, including the rector, Prof. A.C Paterson, and Dr. L.C. De Villiers. In 1920 the student yearbook reported that two TUC teams played in matches organised by the Pretoria Cricket association and that students and staff had a “levendig belang” (lively interest) in the sport.

The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA's numerous holdings include an extensive photo collection, as well as clippings detailing student life as featured in the newspaper clipping and histories of the University.  Please contact us at [email protected] to share your Tukkies experiences, or visit the UPA reading room to view our collection.
