A Day in the Life of the University of Pretoria. 14 September 1945

On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the UP Council decided that Ophthalmology would become a fully fledged department under the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Dr J.C. Kriek a senior lecturer was appointed as the first Head of Department at the beginning of 1946. The main responsibility of the Department was to train undergraduate and postgraduate students in eye health. In 2008, a research company, Power Vision, requested that the Department assist with clinical trials for an accommodating intraocular lens. This lens has the ability to similarly replicate a normal crystalens.  This lens won the 2009 American Academy of Ophthalmology prize for most innovative lens design.
