A Day in the Life of the University of Pretoria. 23 May 1975

On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the student newspaper, Die Perdeby, reported on the popularity of karate on campus.

The newspaper noted that the Shokokai style was first introduced to UP in May 1975 when Hugo Oliver, the creator of Karate-Do, introduced the Gorjie style to the campus. Olivier was a member of the World Selection Committee. In 1975, Tuks karate had 17 members, five of whom were female students. Tukkie student, George Beetge, was awarded a black belt at the 1975 Karate-Do competition in Potchefstroom. The newspaper encouraged all students, especially female students, to participate in the club’s training sessions.
