On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the student newspaper, Die Perdeby, reported on the use of emoticon language.
The article explained that students are changing the face of text messaging. Emoticons have evolved into a novel way for students to express their personal style of texting - a complete new language complete with an unwritten manual. This development has not gone unnoticed by academia and lecturers from the Department of Visual Arts noted that “the capacity of linguistic signs to be meaningful depends on their existence in a social context”.
