A Day in the Life of the University of Pretoria. 18 February 1980

Posted on June 08, 2023

From this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria "onwards students and personnel would no longer have to fill in a card to borrow books from the library. Rather, as part of its modernization, a computer would be used to record the necessary information.

The modernization of the library during this time included: 1750 study seats; study cubicles for doctoral and masters students; an electronic detector to prevent the loss of material; a computerized catalogue to replace the traditional card catalogue; a computerized system to alert students and staff regarding the expiry of the loan period on library material; facilities for the use of audio-visual material; and a computer terminal to conduct searches on international databases.

The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA has an extensive photo collection and clipping collection. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or to access our collection.
