On this “Day in the life of the University of Pretoria” the first tree-planting ceremony took place to welcome first year students on campus.
This new tradition was initiated by Tuks Alumni. The newly planted tree symbolizes the new first year students, while the mature tree will represent the alumni of that year group. Each year since the ceremony began, the Vice-Chancellor and a representative of the first year students’ cohort plant a tree on Welcoming Day. Trees planted at this ceremony are all indigenous and have included: river bushwillow, cheesewood, red currant, mountain seringa, baobab, wild pomegranate, common wild currant, bladder-nut, tree fuchsia, wild gardenia, jacket-plum, red beech, cross-berry and lavender trees.
The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA has an extensive photo collection and clipping collection. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or to access our collection.
