On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the construction of the Chemistry building started. The Chemistry building was built to accommodate the growing number of medical students at the institution.
The cornerstone was laid by UP Chancellor, Dr. H.J. van der Bijl, and the Rector, Prof M.C. Botha. The Second World War made sourcing enough building material difficult. Initially the building only had two floors and housed the Departments of Physics, Organic Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry.
The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA has an extensive photo collection and clipping collection. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or to access our collection.
