A Day in the Life of the University of Pretoria. 15 September 1995

Posted on June 01, 2023

On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" violence broke out on campus.

The political dispensation of the 1990s gave rise to serious agitation on UP’s campuses, leading at times to physical encounters. On one occasion students even occupied the offices of some members of the University Executive. Student representatives of the ANC and SASCO, as well as members of the workers union NEHAWU organised a mass demonstration during September 1995 under the slogan: “Bring Democracy Home”. The tense situation was defused by prolonged negotiations and many students and staff reacted spontaneously to the request of the Principal to assist in cleaning up the campus.
