On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the listening to and singing of all folk music were banned on campus.
The Rand Daily Mail reported that the Student Representative Council (SRC) banned students from singing or listening to folk music. The ban was introduced after a folk singer Des Lindberg sang a song entitled “The ballad of the Township”, which mocked the Security Police and praised South Africans in excile. The SRC stated that folk singing was a “propaganda evil which is making South Africa the target of ‘protesting youth’”.
