A Day in the Life of the University of Pretoria. 11 May 1980

Posted on May 31, 2023

On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" a group of Law students under the encouragement of Gys Rautenbach, a LLB student, started a legal aid clinic.

The aim of the clinic is to provide legal advice to people who do not have the means to afford the services of a lawyer. The Child and Family Welfare Society made their offices available for the students in Eersterust. This neighbourhood was earmarked for coloured people under apartheid legislation. The success of the clinic prompted the students to start a second clinic in Mamelodi, a predominantly black residential area in the east of Pretoria.

The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA has an extensive photo collection and clipping collection. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or to access our collection.
